What Ratan Tata did for the Mumbai victims?

I got following from someone’s Facebook notes I’m not sure about it’s credibility but if it’s true then it’s really really amazing.

Ratan Tata is the chairman of Indian Hotels who own the Taj Mahal Hotel Mumbai, which was the target of the terrorists on 26/11/08.

Hotel President a 5 star property also belongs to Indian Hotels.

The following is really touching.

SALUTE TO MR. RATAN TATA

A. The Tata Gesture

1. All category of employees including those who had completed even 1 day as casuals were treated on duty during the time the hotel was closed.

2. Relief and assistance to all those who were injured and killed

3. The relief and assistance was extended to all those who died at the railway station, surroundings including the “Pav- Bha ji” vendor and the pan shop owners.

4. During the time the hotel was closed, the salaries were sent by money order.

5. A psychiatric cell was established in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences to counsel those who needed such help.

6. The thoughts and anxieties going on people’s mind was constantly tracked and where needed psychological help provided.

7. Employee outreach centers were opened where all help, food, water, sanitation, first aid and counseling was provided. 1600 employees were covered by this facility.

8. Every employee was assigned to one mentor and it was that person’s responsibility to act as a “single window” clearance for any help that the person required.

9. Ratan Tata personally visited the families of all the 80 employees who in some manner – either through injury or getting killed – were affected.

10. The dependents of the employees were flown from outside Mumbai to Mumbai and taken care off in terms of ensuring mental assurance and peace. They were all accommodated in Hotel President for 3 weeks.

11. Ratan Tata himself asked the families and dependents – as to what they wanted him to do.

12. In a record time of 20 days, a new trust was created by the Tatas for the purpose of relief of employees.

13. What is unique is that even the other people, the railway employees, the police staff, the pedestrians who had nothing to do with Tatas were covered by compensation. Each one of them was provided subsistence allowance of Rs. 10K per month for all these people for 6 months.

14. A 4 year old granddaughter of a vendor got 4 bullets in her and only one was removed in the Government hospital. She was taken to Bombay hospital and several lacs were spent by the Tatas on her to fully recover her.

15. New hand carts were provided to several vendors who lost their carts.

16. Tata will take responsibility of life education of 46 children of the victims of the terror.

17. This was the most trying period in the life of the organization. Senior managers including Ratan Tata were visiting funeral to funeral over the 3 days that were most horrible.

18. The settlement for every deceased member ranged from Rs. 36 to 85 lacs [One lakh rupees tranlates to approx 2200 US $ ] in addition to the following benefits:

a. Full last salary for life for the family and dependents;

b. Complete responsibility of education of children and dependents – anywhere in the world.

c. Full Medical facility for the whole family and dependents for rest of their life.

d. All loans and advances were waived off – irrespective of the amount.

e. Counselor for life for each person

B. Epilogue

1. How was such passion created among the employees? How and why did they behave the way they did?

2. The organization is clear that it is not something that someone can take credit for. It is not some training and development that created such behaviour. If someone suggests that – everyone laughs

3. It has to do with the DNA of the organization, with the way Tata culture exists and above all with the situation that prevailed that time. The organization has always been telling that customers and guests are #1 priority

4. The hotel business was started by Jamshedji Tata when he was insulted in one of the British hotels and not allowed to stay there.

5. He created several institutions which later became icons of progress, culture and modernity. IISc is one such institute. He was told by the rulers that time that he can acquire land for IISc to the extent he could fence the same. He could afford fencing only 400 acres.

6. When the HR function hesitatingly made a very rich proposal to Ratan – he said – do you think we are doing enough?

7. The whole approach was that the organization would spend several hundred crore in re-building the property – why not spend equally on the employees who gave their life?

Life @ 30 Days Trial

Few days back I wrote a post on my personal development diary about my 30 days resolution but day by day it’s going tough as each and every person around me started questioning – where the hell you are? why you are not having chicken? why you are not having chai (tea)? So today i thought of declaring it on my pesonal blog. Although I have announced it on Facebook but I guess few have read that. So people here it is -

For 30 Days I’m

  1. Going Vegan i.e No Non Veg + No Dairy products.
  2. Not Using Facebook (Personal Use)
  3. No Negative thoughts
  4. Sleep at 00.00 AM
  5. Wake up at 05.00 AM
  6. Swimming 5 Days a week
  7. Jogging (20 Min), Pull ups (20), Push ups (50), Skipping (1500)
  8. Yoga & Meditation
  9. Limit ipod to 10 hours/30days
  10. Reading book daily
  11. No Junk food from out side
  12. Be happy all the time
  13. And “5 personal can’t disclose” type resolution ;)
It’s 13th Day and I’m going strong
If all goes well then I’ll take some of it to further 30 days ;)

The biggest crime in the entire world today more than terrorism is Human trafficking. I watched this today by “Sunitha Krishnan”.

Sunitha Krishnan has dedicated her life to rescuing women and children from sex slavery, a multimilion-dollar global market. In this courageous talk, she tells three powerful stories, as well as her own, and calls for a more humane approach to helping these young victims rebuild their lives.

The auditorium fell dead silent when Dr. Sunitha Krishnan stepped onto the stage at TED India on November 6. And Tedsters around the world, watching via a live stream webcast, were transfixed.

The diminutive, soft-spoken, anti-trafficking crusader, who was gang-raped as a teenager, began her talk with the heart-wrenching stories of three children – Pranitha, Shaheen and Anjali – whom she rescued as part of her work with Prajwala, an organization she co-founded in 1996.

Pranitha’s mother, Dr. Krishnan said, had been an HIV-infected prostitute, who, when she became too ill with AIDS to work, sold her then four-year-old daughter to a broker who prostituted her. Little Pranitha, whose angelic face smiled from a huge screen behind Dr. Krishnan, was raped repeatedly by dozens of men day after day before she was rescued.

The second toddler, Shaheen, was so brutally sexually assaulted after being trafficked that her intestines burst through her abdomen, and had to be surgically re-inserted into her body.

According to Dr. Sunitha the biggest challenge she faces while rescuing the girls is not from the people who are involved in the business but the biggest challenge is “Our civic society”. They do not get the acceptence from our so called “Civic Society”. My biggest challaenge is the block of you of me to accept them as one of them. In her own words

“It’s very fashionable to talk about human trafficking in this fantastic AC hall.  It’s very nice for discussion, discourse, making films and everything.  But it is not nice to bring them to our homes.  It’s not nice to give them employment in our factories, our companies.  It’s not nice for our children to study with their children.  There it ends.  That’s my biggest challenge.”

They need you compassion, your empathy more than anything else they need you acceptance.

Remember our thoughts and our feelings makes our future and our life….

The power of happy thoughts shouldn’t be underestimated. In an average day it is estimated that we have around 60,000 thoughts. Happy thoughts connect us with the clarity, confidence and courage to act… to know what to do. To travel down our own path rather than the same trail everyone else follows.

Jealous, angry and fearful thoughts take us away from our own path… our own purpose. They strip us of our power and ability to act effectively. If we think happy thoughts… we create happy perceptions… which lead us to happy events. And so we create a exciting circle (where we become ever happier) as opposed to a vicious circle. If we think fearful thoughts we become afraid and act defensively. This pushes away other people and other possibilities away from us. And so we become lonelier and more afraid.

The route to a happier life is through happy thoughts. Not just because they make you feel better immediately… but because happier thoughts give you a stronger and more stable foundation to your life. You are in control rather than being bounced around by life. – coachingtohappiness

Going to TedxCalcutta

I’m very much excited about coming TEDx event in calcutta. This is the first TED event that I’m going to attend. I’m a big fan of TED videos but never thought that I could be able to attend it in my life time cause it’s entry fee is more than Tata’s Nano car, but surprisingly TEDxCalcutta is only 50 USD.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

Our event is call TEDxCalcutta, where x=independently organized TED event. At our TEDxCalcutta event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

Wear sunscreen.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts. Don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.

FLOSS

Don’t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long and, in the end, it’s only with yourself.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.

DANCE, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They’re your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

TRAVEL

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you’ll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you’ll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair or by the time you’re 40 it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

My Keys to Happiness

For me happiness is synergy between mind and body and in order to be really happy you need to find synergistic Keys of them. I’ve always wanted to be only happy and nothing else. But somehow I always messed up things and landed on sadistic zone. From last few days I’ve been trying to find out what really makes me happy coz if all I want to be happy then why not always do things that make me happy. The keys which make me HIGH are -

  1. Exercise – Perfect balance between Skipping, Jogging, walking, Stretching, Yoga and Meditation along with spiritual lounge music or Chinese classical instrumental gives that high which I believe cannot be induced by any drug in world although I haven’t tried any.
  2. Dance – Free style dancing (in Discotheque) for 5-6 hours the whole night, takes me to highest level of my body and soul.
  3. Music – Listening to good songs.
  4. Perfect Balance – Balance in my routine, in my food and in everything I do makes me very happy.
  5. When I Challenge my deepest fear of facing Unknown really gives a kick.
  6. Helping others without hoping for anything in return makes me really really happy.
  7. Rest keys yet to discover.

I don’t know whether there are any more keys left or not but one thing I’ve decided is that I’ll keep discovering keys to my happiness and practice them regularly. Like I’m making lots of videos to give out my fear of facing cameras. Soon you can find them here..

I just wanted to confront this fact that this quote is not for me not even from a small tiny miny angle. Today at TechShu headquarter team SFC were busy shooting videos for wishing Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to our clients. And I got so nervous to face the camera that I was close to stammering I don’t know what was  bothering me but after six retakes I got the not so happy shot.
